The Santa Cruz County Black Health Matters Initiative is a community initiative that promotes health and equity through a network of community trust, advocacy, and collaboration to improve the quality of life for Black residents in Santa Cruz County.

WE ACHIEVE OUR MISSION THROUGH THREE MAIN PROGRAMS

CULTURAL AND OUTDOOR EVENTS

Over the past 3 years we have learned that BHMI services show improved mental health, authentic connection and a stronger and healthier community. From our first hybrid virtual BBQ in 2020, to yoga classes, surfing for the first time with Black Surf Santa Cruz, and nature hikes in county and state parks with our partner organizations, our grassroots efforts exist to respond to the community’s needs and improved quality of life.

COMMUNITY SPONSORED EVENTS

SCCBHMI provides ongoing community sponsorship to Black led organizations, businesses and individuals curating and producing Black centered events to foster cultural connection, belonging, and agency. We sponsor events based on an application process and provide resources and support for selected community events.

YOUTH AMBASSADORS

SCC Black Health Matters Initiative Youth Ambassadors program was established to elevate the mental health and wellness of Black youth in Santa Cruz county by allowing data to inform and guide our work. Our services focus on fostering authentic, impactful relationships with one another, offering mentorship and educational support, and providing community engagement and leadership opportunities.
